Bringing your own car to various parts of the Visayas keeps you independent from local transport and dosen't cost the world. As long as you are able to back up into the barge you'll find travelling this way quite easy. For most destinations a reservation is not neccessarily required but from own experiences I'd say it's highly recommended. Even with a reservation you may find it sometimes difficult to get a ride, during peak travelling times like Easter and Christmas book well in advance. It happens that someone may ask you for donations to get on board, do not give in, insist on your booked ticket and talk to a person in charge.
